Loading Dock Equipment

A dock leveler is variable grade ramp platform that is designed to be used as a bridge between the loading dock floor surface and the surface of the load bed of a transporter vehicle. A Blue Giant dock leveler allows for safe and efficient loading and unloading of goods to/from a transporter vehicle using forklifts or pallet trucks. A dock leveler must be able to support extremely heavy loads. It must also must be able to service a wide range of load bed heights and accommodate unevenly distributed loads. A Blue Giant dock Leveler incorporates a "floating" rear hinge, otherwise know as Maintained Tilt, that allow the deck plate to tilt to accommodate canted load beds. When integrated with a Blue Giant Vehicle Restraint, the result is a dock leveler solution that reduces movement of the load bed and optimizes safety and efficiency. A Blue Giant Dock Leveler is designed to withstand the repeated abuse of dynamic stresses, while maintaining its versatility and structural integrity.

Blue Giant offers a wide range of capacities, deck sizes, deck constructions and both hydraulic and mechanical operation to suit virtually any application, in any environment. Mechanical dock levelers are spring biased upwards and incorporate a hold down mechanism, while hydraulic units are powered by an electro-hydraulic system.

Regardless of your application the most economical and durable solution is a Blue Giant Dock Leveler.

Hydraulic Dock Levelers
Hydraulic dock levelers are simple to operate and require no bending or pulling on the part of the operator. Activation is simply achieved through the use of constant pressure push button controls. In applications involving high capacities, multiple shifts and/or severe conditions, a hydraulic dock leveler is recommended. Safety concerns are more thoroughly addressed by using hydraulic levelers due to the flexibility of the electro/hydraulic power source. Hydraulic units also facilitate interlock capabilities to other equipment such as vehicle restraints, inflatable dock seals/shelters, overhead doors etc. The higher initial cost of a hydraulic unit (over mechanical ones) is offset by its reduced requirement for maintenance and its abundant features.

Mechanical Dock Levelers
Mechanical dock levelers are operated by pulling the ring of the release chain. This disengages the hold down device and permits the lifting mechanism to raise the leveler deck and extend and lock the lip in position. The attendant then "walks down" the deck until the extended lip of the leveler rests on the vehicle bed. When the loading / unloading operation is completed, the operator pulls the ring on the release chain to again release the hold down to partially raise the deck (only if the unit was servicing below dock level). The lip will return to the pendant (retracted) position and the operator will then walk the deck down into the stored position. One major advantage of a mechanical over hydraulic dock leveler is that mechanical units do not require any electrical provisions and may be operated in the event of a power failure. However routine maintenance and lubrication does tend to increase the long-term expense of a mechanical unit. In addition, many of the features and accessories that are available for hydraulic units are not offered for mechanical ones.

Maintained Tilt
The entire deck floats with the trailer, eliminating deck fatigue and weld breakage.

The deck articulates to maintain flush lip contact with the trailer, providing a smooth transition. Without maintained tilt, the dock lip does not maintain positive full-width contact with the trailer bed during load transfers. This results in point loading on the lip causing bending and fatigue, which creates a knife edge situation that is problematic for the dock attendant inside the trailer, as well as forklift tire chunking and steering system damage.
